Vintage Wedding Flowers

Vintage Wedding FlowersThe tradition of having ‘something old’ on your wedding day has been around for many years, but where this ritual may have once only applied to a hand-me-down charm loaned to the bride for her big day, modern day brides seem to be embracing more of the old and less of the new as vintage fashion takes over the wedding scene.

The dictionary definition of vintage is ‘of a past season’. For many ‘vintage’ conjures up images of Sunday cricket matches, fetes on the village green and afternoon tea parties with mum’s best loved china. Whatever your own personal vision of vintage, nostalgia is sure to be at the heart of it.

So what sums up a vintage themed wedding? Colour-wise; cream, ivory (never white) and all shades of pink from pale to dusky with a splash of cerise. Green is also popular, particularly olive green and the soft grey-green of eucalyptus. Overall the look could be described as cottage garden- very flowery, natural and oh-so pretty.

If you’ve decided on a vintage feel for your wedding, chances are that you’ve already bought your dream dress and are now wondering how to carry your theme through to your wedding flowers.

Vintage is an easy enough look to create with the right flower choices and a few carefully chosen accessories. Always ahead of the trends, your local Interflora florist will be able to advise you on different options within your budget. Flower-wise you can’t go wrong with roses and you’ll be surprised at just how many varieties seem to have been purpose made for this occasion. Ask your florist to see samples of Amnesia, Hypnose and Upper Secret roses. Their delicate pink hues are perfect for a vintage themed wedding. However if you’d rather not have roses as the lead flower at your wedding you can still achieve the look with big blousy peonies, hydrangeas or delphiniums and gladioli.

The wonderful thing about a vintage theme is that almost anything goes, giving you and your florist license to be creative- especially when it comes to the finishing touches. For a quirky twist on vintage consider presenting your flowers in decoupage pots, recycled jam jars and china jugs. A few pretty pots edged with ribbon and lace and filled with fresh flowers will look fabulous dotted along a top table.
