The lisianthus (Eustoma russellianum) is a pretty, delicate flower that’s a firm favourite with florists and gardeners alike. Its furled appearance still puzzles some and many refer to it as a rose.
Lisianthus’ elegant soft hues and long vase life make it a particularly appropriate choice for summer weddings and parties.
Despite its fragile appearance, the flower is actually a native of the arid states of South America and Mexico, where it grows wild.
It is often referred to as the Texan bluebell or Prairie gentian.
Lisianthus is available in a wide and extremely useful palette of colours, from pure white through to deep purple flowers.
The fact that lisianthus can be obtained in a real cream (Piccolo yellow) and a real lilac (Mariachi Misty Blue) has saved the day for many brides looking for that perfect shade to match their colour scheme.
Two-tone lisianthus is yet another colour combination of this versatile flower, the most common being white tipped with purple, red, pink or even light green. The lisianthus can also grow either a single or double flower.
Some varieties can be obtained all year round, although peak availability is from May to October. Slightly more seasonal varieties include the ‘King Violet’, a striking purple flower, which is only available in the summer months.
Use an appropriate flower food in a clean container (not metal).
Storage and temperature
Store at 2-5°C. Once in the vase, keep the plant away from excess heat and moisture. Good air circulation is essential. You should change the water and re-cut the stems frequently to keep it in top condition.
