National Kissing Day: famous movie kisses

by Charlotte.Barnes on July 6, 2011

It’s National Kissing Day today and to celebrate we thought we’d remind you of some of the most iconic big screen kisses.

Here are our favourites…

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

The whole film seems to be building up to the moment when Jamal kisses his childhood friend Latika. That moment finally comes on a Mumbai train platform. Jamal says “This is our destiny” before he kisses her.

Spiderman (2002)

The rain-soaked, upside down kiss between Spiderman and Mary Jane is clumsy yet exciting. Tobey Maguire, who plays Spiderman, was less than enchanted by it though as he had rainwater running up his nose during the scene.

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

The classic tale of a love that transcends barriers is shown perfectly here. During a romantic meal in the alley behind an Italian restaurant the two pups come together via a long piece of spaghetti. Tramp even lets Lady have the last meatball.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

This kiss between Ennis and Jack, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, won best kiss at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards. The kiss takes place four years after their whirlwind romance on the mountain. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful.

The Notebook (2004)

After seven years apart, Allie and Noah finally come together for a wonderful, passionate kiss in the rain. It’s heart wrenching and completely wonderful.

Titanic (1997)

After the famous scene on the bow of the ship Jack wraps his arms around Rose and they share a kiss. It’s a captivating scene that does nothing to prepare the viewer for the tragedy that is soon to tear them apart.

West Side Story (1961)

This musical, based on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, shows the two star-crossed lovers kissing for the first time after the gymnasium dance sequence. They kiss but Maria’s brother intervenes and pushes Tony away from her.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1964)

During a conversation with Sam Wainwright, Mary and George have to share the earpiece of a phone so they can talk and listen to him. George is overwhelmed by the closeness between him and Mary and eventually drops the phone and kisses her.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

During a New Year’s Eve party Sally ditches her date. Harry races across Manhattan to the party where he finds a lonely Sally and professes his love for her. They then kiss into the New Year.
