Interflora’s Florist Competition

by Charlotte.Barnes on August 13, 2009

Florist of the Year 2009Florists from around the UK competed to be crowned the best of young and emerging talent.

Find out if your local florist was a winner…For over 40 years the Interflora Florist of the Year competition has been seen as the pinnacle of achievement and a great stepping stone towards future success.

This competitive event happens every 2 years and provides Interflora Florists with the opportunity to stretch their creativity as well as their floristry and set a benchmark for the industry.

To get to this year’s final in April 2009, the florists had already won regional events. The theme of both finals was Let’s Party and each competitor had to design 4 pieces:

Designer’s Choice – a free expression piece
Birthday Party – a birthday table setting
Party Bag – a handbag
Rock ‘n’ Roll – a hand tied bouquet

Competitors got extra points if the 4 designs formed a cohesive picture when placed together in a display booth.

Florist of the Year

Overall winner was Francisco Martinez from Lansdowne Florist, Bournemouth. Francisco, from Alicante in Spain, submitted a vibrant, lively entry which scored the most points in each of the categories.

There will be limited space left on Francisco’s mantelpiece as this latest award will join a Best in Show award from Chelsea in 2006.

Florist of the Future

Joseph Massie of Fishlocks flower Express in Liverpool was crowned winner of the competition for florists who have spent 4 years or less in the trade. Joseph’s entry was a colourful, delicate mix of oranges, yellows, purples and limes. The birthday table setting had a table covered with a time-consuming cloth of party straws that took 2 days to make.

No stranger to awards, Joseph won the BFA Young Florist of the Year 2007 and competed at Eurofleurs in Brussels 2008.

A special mention must go to Jennifer Murphy, who came a very close second. Her first ever major competition entry included a custom-made guitar, designed so a vase can sit inside it.
