Interflora florist Jennifer Murphy from Flowers by Moira, Co Meath, has been awarded not only a Gold medal at the world’s most famous flower show, but she has also taken the prestigious title of RHS Chelsea Florist of the Year.
The schedule, to produce a chandelier suitable to be hung at a Diamond Jubilee dinner for the Queen, produced some incredible and quite breath-taking work. Jennifer’s winning design was a magnificent structure of red roses, crimson phalaenopsis orchids and deep red arum/calla lilies.
To really show the amount of dedication and effort put into the design it also included 250 meters of crocheted silver wire – that’s a lot of hours knitting! After painstaking preparation, the structure had to be transported from Ireland in three pieces before being carefully put together at the showground.
‘I’m absolutely thrilled to have won’ said Jennifer, ‘it was the first time the British Florist Association had held the heats for the Chelsea competition in Ireland, and to win first time is incredible’
But Jennifer wasn’t the only medal winner – Jillian Page from ‘Something Special Flowers’ in Blairgowrie, Perthshire also picked up a Silver Gilt for a beautiful design of white phalaenopsis, purple arums and drop crystals. Transported with great care from Scotland, Jillian estimated it took her over 36 hours to make.
Jillian had a double reason to celebrate as her work colleague, Paula McLagan, also picked up a Silver Gilt medal in the RHS Young Chelsea Florist on Monday. ‘Blairgowrie is buzzing!’ she proudly announced.
Also reaching the finals of the Chelsea competition was Interflora florist Vicky Rymell from Hubbards Florist in Coventry, who is a keen and dedicated competitor. Although her chandelier design narrowly missed being awarded a medal, it impressed the visitors with its trails of white orchids and delicate trails of pearls and crystals.
Seeing professional floristry at Chelsea is always a thrill and to have Interflora florists winning medals and to take the title of RHS Chelsea Florist of the Year is just the icing on the cake – a huge ‘well done’ to everyone that took part.
