How to: make a beautiful Valentine’s centrepiece

For a truly romantic evening in on Valentine’s Day flowers, champagne and candlelight can’t be beaten.

This centrepiece and champagne holder – the latest in our series of how-to guides – is easy to make and won’t take you much time at all….

So, whether you’ve planned to present your loved one with Valentine’s Flowers and cook them a special dinner, this design will add individuality and atmosphere to your romantic Valentine’s evening.

Find a special place for your design – either in the centre of the table while you wine and dine your loved one, or somewhere else where the soft flicker of candlelight and a bottle of champagne will enhance the mood.

You will need:

• 12 inches (30cm) of Nylor base posy pad
• Oasis wine cooler
• Church candle
• 1 bunch of Salal
• 1 bunch Pittosporum
• 2 bunches of Eucalyptus gunnii
• Flat moss
• 5 stems of Silver Brunei
• 2 Anthurium Safari
• 1 stem of Chrysanthemum ‘Red Rag’
• 4 stems of Hypericum
• 1 Black Baccara Rose
• 12 Gloriosa Lilies
• 1 stem of Dracaena marginata
• Some steel grass
• Vanda orchid roots (available commercially from Holland)

Step 1

Draw round the base of the candle and wine cooler on the posy pad and cut out the foam. To ensure absolute stability for the cooler, cut right down to the plastic base.

Step 2

Using strong groupings for the Eucalyptus, Pittosporum and Salal, create a foliage edge.

Step 3

Fill in the centre of the posy pad with groupings of Chrysanthemum, Silver Brunei, moss and Hypericum. Start to add in the focal flowers from the outside working your way in.

Step 4

The Anthuriums and Gloriosa will make a stronger statement if they are grouped rather than scattered. The inclusion of a single black Baccara rose and the Dracaena give extra depth and height to the design.

Step 5

Encircle the design with steel grass and Vanda roots. Light the candle and put the champagne in plenty of ice and get ready for your romantic night in!
